Accountability in Love

Love in Balance

"Love in Balance" by Angie K. Millgate (c)2011

I’ve been focusing a lot lately on the concepts of accountability and integrity and what they mean to me. Because of this, I’m on high alert for information that pertains to accountability and integrity. I’m being aware of my words, thoughts, actions and emotions to verify that I’m being accountable and in line with integrity. Sometimes the information shows up in surprising ways.

Tonight, as I stressed my way through my math homework for hours on end, I was streaming some music through aolradio.com. A song came on that I had never heard before, but it caught my attention. It has a catchy melody and moving underlying rhythm but it wasn’t that that caught my attention, it was this line: “You put your arms around me and I’m home.”

I kept doing my math, thinking how sweet that line was and remembering what it felt like to be held in someone’s arms and finally feel that I am home. That was the only line that sank in, but I immediately liked the song. I didn’t recognize the singer, so I went to my streaming window to find out the information… “Arms” by Christina Perri.

I looked up the lyrics and the video and it was then that I realized that this song has amazing accountability on the singer’s part. She is taking accountability for how she is treating her lover, why she isn’t fully “in” the relationship and what she is hoping for. In the end, as I read through the lyrics and listened to the song (follow this link to the official lyrics video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvbErM6ZTBA), I realized how terribly sad the song is.

It opened me up to thinking about the ways that I hold love out of my life, the way I hide behind my walls and how I yearn to have someone put their arms around me and finally feel that I am home again. And, when his arms are around me and I am home, that home is what I actually want and I want to stay. Because I’ve been in someone’s arms and have finally felt at home and then I ran away…

Lyrics:
“Arms” by Christina Perri

I never thought that you would be the one to hold my heart
But you came around and you knocked me off the ground from the start

You put your arms around me
And I believe that it’s easier for you to let me go
You put your arms around me and I’m home

How many times will you let me change my mind and turn around
I can’t decide if I’ll let you save my life or if I’ll drown

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, ’cause I’m already falling
I’ll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I’m home

The world is coming down on me and I can’t find a reason to be loved
I never wanna leave you but I can’t make you bleed if I’m alone

You put your arms around me
And I believe that it’s easier for you to let me go

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, ’cause I’m already falling
I’ll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I’m home

I tried my best to never let you in to see the truth
And I’ve never opened up
I’ve never truly loved ‘Till you put your arms around me
And I believe that it’s easier for you to let me go

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, ’cause I’m already falling
I’ll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I’m home

You put your arms around me and I’m home
