Hush, Hush!

In 1985, I was in high school and full of the fluffy dreams that I simply knew would come true.  IF (and that is a BIG I-F, bolded and all caps) I was good.  During that time, a song came out called Voices Carry from the group Til Tuesday. I loved it!

I should have listened to the words then.

So, I’m talking about this today because I had a metaphysical experience with this very same song. I’ve been playing a lot in the realm of “language” over the last few months and learning to use my voice to speak the truth. It has been painful at times. At other times it has been exhilarating beyond belief. Messages, lessons and pieces of what I’m most needing to KNOW in that moment have popped up in the most miraculous of ways. Today it was in that song.

I was having lunch with my best friend, Jen, and afterward we decided to go meet up at the mall to do a little browsing. Taking our separate cars, we started off on our way. In my car, I changed the channel on my stereo and, suddenly, the words to that song started blasting through the atmosphere.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww… I sighed, finding myself enveloped in delicious, happy memories of the time when I danced 24/7 and, then… the words started sinking in…

I’m in the dark, I’d like to read his mind
but I’m frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he’s thinking of
to tear him away
when I tell him that I’m falling in love
why does he say

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

I try so hard not to get upset
because I know all the trouble I’ll get
oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
and something to fear
and I try so hard to keep it inside
so no one can hear

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

He wants me
but only part of the time
He wants me
if he can keep me in line

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

hush hush, darling, she might overhear
oh, no-voices carry
he said shut up he said shut up
oh God can’t you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk

Well… that was a fun ride.  NOT! I felt a little kerfuffled and brushed it off, going inside to laugh and shop with Jen because that was SURE to be a fabulous time.

We came out about a half hour later – not much to find at that mall – and got in our separate cars to journey toward the next fun event. I flipped the channels on my stereo and what to my wondering ears did appear but…

He wants me
but only part of the time
He wants me
if he can keep me in line

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

hush hush, darling, she might overhear
oh, no-voices carry
he said shut up he said shut up
oh God can’t you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk

Come on! Really??!

It became abundantly clear to me over this weekend that it is quite possible that I do not know everything that I thought I did. And, in the realm of language, I’m certain I do not. More importantly, I have gone far too long without using my voice to speak my truth.

Okay.

I’m listening.

Voices DO carry! Thank God!

Thanks for sharing, Angie! That’s very powerful! Words!! I LOVE words! Sometimes it makes me wonder why we don’t pay more attention to them!
By the way, have you read “Aspire” by Kevin Hall? If not, you GOTTA! “Aspire~Discovering Your Purpose Through The Power of Words”.
